Living in Ahwatukee provides a relaxing, slow-paced, and family-centered lifestyle. The streets are lined with everything from single-family starter homes to luxury estates with sprawling mountain views and new-construction condos of all sizes. Regardless of which you choose, proximity to South Mountain is sure to turn you into a hiker, biker, runner, or, at least, an explorer of its vast outdoor amenities. Beautiful views are abound in every direction, as much of Ahwatukee borders the Gila River Indian Reservation and has gone undeveloped, providing residents with vast swaths of stunning desert landscapes as far as the eye can see.

At first glance, Ahwatukee may seem secluded, but don’t be deceived. Long-planned development projects are opening up access to the entire Valley. Downtown, Sky Harbor, and even LA will all seem much closer than they did before. Of course, with multiple prestigious golf courses, master-planned parks, and tons of hiking and biking trails, there’s plenty for residents of all ages to do without leaving the community.

Ahwatukee is one of the most common places for Phoenix transplants to relocate to. Why? Because when researching communities around the Valley, you quickly discover that they offer some of the best public school options, paired with the most reasonable median home price.

Ahwatukee is a part of the highly rated and oft-praised Kyrene School District. The district has received 13 A+ ratings for its schools, in addition to being recognized by Salt River Projects for its innovations in the world of energy conservation. An ever-growing list of staff and faculty have been awarded at every level, including nationally, for their merit and superior performance. Moreover, Ahwatukee schools are known for their history of catering to students with developmental or learning disabilities. Some of the most caring, most effective, and most important teachers in all of Phoenix are within these walls.

It’s also worth mentioning that, if you prefer the private route, Summit School of Ahwatukee is an exceptional private school in the area. They provide an engaging and rigorous curriculum, taught by experienced and dedicated teachers. The school has multitude of national, state, and local awards as well as two national accreditations.

The Work

Ahwatukee is in the midst of a development boom. On its south end, what used to be called Pecos Road is becoming an extension of the Loop 202 freeway. This newly constructed access point will grant the area a key transportation route, allowing interstate commerce to bypass urban gridlock. It’s predicted that, in just a few short years, this decades-planned development project will bring an untold number of transit and manufacturing jobs to the area, turning Ahwatukee into something of a Southwest hub for such business. With job growth through the roof, property rates are likely to follow suit.

None of this is to say that residents of Ahwatukee don’t currently enjoy a strong economy. With tech and business hubs such as Chandler and Tempe only minutes away, the community promises convenient access to some of the most prominent fields and companies metro Phoenix has to offer. Ahwatukee neighborhoods are especially popular among teachers and healthcare professionals, with 20% of its residents working within these fields. Another 16% are in retail, 12% in manufacturing, and an additional 12% find themselves in various other professional/executive settings. Overall, 80% of Ahwatukee residents commute in their own vehicles to work. 64% of residents have a completed higher education degree in the form of bachelor’s or higher. 24% of the households have an income of $150,000 or more and 36% of households have an income of $75,000 or more.

Additionally, the area offers several famous Southwest spots such as Rustler's Rooste, a dining experience perfect for families. Ahwatukee Foothills Towne Center offers a wide array of shopping and dining, as well as a movie theater.

Ahwatukee is home to many outdoorsy folks, and for good reason. Being at the “edge” of Phoenix’s development boom as well as the base of South Mountain, it offers incredibly easy access to countless trailheads. South Mountain has some of the most famous single-track in the valley, as well as walk-only trails for more casual strolls. Additionally, Ahwatukee is home to three different golf courses waiting for your exploration, including Foothills Golf Club, the par-72 championship, links-style course, designed by internationally acclaimed architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish.

To top it off, the community is home to a seemingly endless system of parks, all of which offer various family-friendly experiences, including aquatic centers, lakes, designated spaces for team sports, and even dog-specific parks. You never need venture far from home for some fun in the sun!
